The Total Number of Numbered 90’s Michael Jordan Inserts is…

8,831!

Yup, according to my calculations.  That is how many serial numbered Jordan 90’s inserts I counted, for the cards documented in this post. That count includes cards serial numbered 500 or less.  The mind-blowing stuff comes if you remove the three cards numbered to 500 (1997 Hoops High Voltage, 1998 Encore Driving Forces and 1998 Hardcourt Homecourt Advantage), the 1996 E-X2000 Essential Credential numbered to 499.

The total would then become 6,832 cards.  Take it a step further, and if we only count the cards that are numbered to 250 or less, we have an tiny 5,132 total cards available.  If we narrow it down even further, to the cream of the crop – cards numbered 150 or less, we have a minuscule….

3,392 total cards.

UPDATE: after making this list, I realized that there is a 1998 Upper Deck Intensity Gold /25 that I didn’t account for when I put together the images of the cards numbered to 25.  I don’t have a picture of that card.  So the new total is actually 4,017 total cards.

*Note that this list does not include 1of 1 masterpieces or parallels cards, such as these.  There probably other parallel set that I didn’t include here too.  Upper Deck made so many parallels that I may have missed some.

1998 HologfrFX cards (10 cards, numbered to 23 each)
1998 Black Diamond Green Quad (14 cards, numbered to 150 each)
1998 Upper Deck Game Action Gold (30 cards, numbered to 23 each)
1999 Encore Gold (26 cards?, numbered to 125 each)
1999 Upper Deck Retro (10 cards, numbered to 50 cards each)
1999 Upper Deck MVP Super Script (29 cards, numbered to 25 cards each)

RECORD HIGH: 1997 Topps Chrome Shooting Stars Refractor

At this rate, there won’t be a 90’s Michael Jordan insert you can touch for less than $100.

Seriously. Well, maybe. It seems ridiculous to say, but the latest auction that caught my eye was for a 1997 Topps Chrome Shooting Stars Refractor. This card was trading around $15-$30 for the longest time and I’ve never bothered to record any sales, but I’ve noticed it before.

The most recent auction ended at a crazy $77, from seller bigboydsportscards3, a noted Michael Jordan insert seller. There hasn’t been another copy auctioned in the precious two weeks, so that could have contributed to the bidding war that ended up with a record high price for this particular auction. It looks legit; a battle betwen a bidder with 58 feedback and the winning bidder, with 106 feedback. Needles to say, I think I should keep my eye on all these once idle inserts that are approaching $50, $60 and more lately.

Then again, it is possible that this sale is an anomaly and prices will revert back to under $40 in the next few auctions. But if prices continue to escalate, this would serve as the catalyst. Stay tuned.

Here are some previous sales that I was able to pull up with a Google Search:

A Preview of a Card I Haven’t Tracked Lately

This 1998 Topps Chrome Preview Refractor is not numbered. It isn’t part of a historic set. It doesn’t even show his face. However, it is one of my favorite looking inserts of Michael Jordan. One is currently up for bid and I am excited to see how much it ends at. This one comes from ebayID: flydisco in Illinois. When I last tracked this card regularly in 2009, it traded around $150. In 2011, I haven’t tracked any sales yet. My guess? It will end around $225.

It is currently at $60 after one bid, with four days left.
